Leatherman Fuse Tool - More Capable Compared With The Less Pricey Leatherman Kick But Leaner And Even Lighter Than The Leatherman Blast

All 3 pocket tools have a strong resemblance to one another, and all make use of the same enhanced stronger elliptical plier head. (In addition to the Leatherman Charge and Leatherman Wave).

The pliers on the Leatherman Fuse are identical in width to my previous Leatherman PST, despite this the pivot area is the considerably wider and stronger. When using the Fuse on quite a few odd jobs at home, I didn't feel that this extra width started to get in the way. With a bigger wire cutter area too, I am sure the new plier head design is a sure improvement.

If you are more used to the original Leatherman series, the first thing that is clearcut with regards to the Leatherman Fuse is its handle scales. Plastic grips with curved edges have been molded in along the edges, leading to the pliers being far more easy to grip than the first used plain steel sides. A number of finger grooves has also been added, which will help keep the multi tool from sliding when your hands are damp.

Situated in one handle, the Leatherman Fuse features a pair of scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, plus a cap lifter/can opener/wire stripper combo blade. The scissors are pretty decent, but they are a backward step in all honesty. For some reason, Leatherman has built them smaller than the first Wave's scissors, with a much shorter cutting stroke. I preferred the previous ones better.

A big improvement though, is the Phillips screwdriver. In a different way to those on cheap imported multi tools, it has a really well thought out appearance to it. It's also plenty long enough to work on recessed screws situated in the battery storage area on my boy's new toys.

The other handle has a clip point knife blade together with two flat head screwdrivers, also a good length.

Speaking of long tools, this balde should be titled the Crocodile Dundee of pocket tool blades, with a lot more reach than that of previous multi tools in its class. What a knife!

But in comparison with its less expensive sibling the Kick, the one additional feature the Fuse has is its scissors. Which kinda sucks. Why didn't Leatherman leave the pointless lanyard ring off the Fuse, and replace it with a good diamond file. I regularly us a file, and if I had the choice, would not carry a multi tool without one.

Another valid point about the Fuse blades; they all lock. Using the same rocker switch lock that Leatherman USA initially fitted to the Crunch, each tool locks securely into position with a reassuring click. Ok, I know, I carried an first PST without locking blades for more than a decade. But it's like power steering on pick-up trucks; as soon as it's an option, it makes no sense to be without it. Locking blades are a necessary thing in my opinion.
